Description
Little Girl Rendering of Grinam Bust (Frozen Girl), Pencil Drawing with White Chalk, was an exercise of mine using the studio techniques of the classical atelier. It is a beginning exercise to drawing from life, drawing from a bust. It is much more difficult than drawing from a flat photograph, of course. I found the wonderfully subtle curvilinear lines changing on me and moving around. At least, that is how it felt. I’m sure it feels that way to a total new student. The use of mid-toned paper like this is to start you out at the middle, so you can darken your form with different softnesses of pencils. Then to lighten it with whilte chalk rubbed into the grey paper to give several lighter shades, and not just one. This ends up having a sculptural effect much like the bust itself.
