Lebanon Plantation #2: Where Home Used To Be

I painted this from a dream where I saw the house in maroons and eggplant colors. It’s an artist’s take on sepia-toned photographs which add the look of age. Generations of my family have lived in the ante-bellum house I grew up in for some years. Next to my relatives stands an unknown soldier. My direct ancestor, Janie Smith, appears cameo-style in the doorway to the house, and the words of her famous letter are written over the painting on the right hand side facing– words which she wrote on pieces of wall paper ang which give us a remarkable glimpse into her chaotic world, March-April 1865. The original letter is in the Mrs. Thomas H. Webb Collection at the North Carolina State Department of Archives & History in Raleigh, NC.
The painting was juried into the 2002nd 25th Anniversary Southern Watercolor Society Exhibition and won the Daniel Smith & Silver brush Award from Juror Frank Webb.

I will paint a watercolor copy of this. Allow 2-3 weeks for delivery.
