Old homes left to weather the elements are a favorite subject of photographers and artists. This one was the result of a photo shoot I purposefully went on, and was a real ‘find.’ The doors were as carved by the elements as I can imagine, the grain eaten into three-dimensional routes that could never again be planed flat, it looked like. The colors of the antique locks had bled into the wood. The green of the briars had woven themselves into a guardrail in front of the door and infused a green cast into the door.

What I loved most about this very unusual watercolor of mine was the linear aspect: it all translated into light washes and lines. I found that it connected to a pencil drawing in theme that I had done years back, of a tractor in the field with vines growing up through it and taking it over. I have other photographs that are waiting to inspire a whole collection of like watercolor paintings and the one pencil that I am calling “Delayed Return.”

I love the sense of the house set up and objects left waiting for their owners to return and claim their inheritance. Here’s hoping you enjoy the subtle mystery locked within the ordinary.
